For the 5th time, the PhD workshop “Energieinformatik” (Energy Informatics) discusses the role of ICT and computer science in future energy systems. The energy turnaround – a politically supervised shift in direction from nuclear and fossil fuels to sustainable sources of energy – yields drastic changes in the operation of existing energy supply systems and requires a paradigm shift in both their planning and operation.

The technological aspects as well as the involvement of consumers play a crucial role in the necessary transformation process. Hence, not only the development, evaluation and application of new technologies and methods, but also the complex interactions between them, including the users of these components, have to be investigated. These challenges are not limited to the domain of electric power and have to be extended to integrate electricity, mobility, gas and heat supply systems.

The workshop “Energieinformatik (Energy Informatics) 2014″ invites PhD students whose research focuses on the intersection of information technology, power engineering and energy. This workshop presents an opportunity for discussing current work – ranging from immature ideas to project/thesis results – with researchers from within the same community. Hence, long papers, project descriptions and progress reports in the form of short papers are welcome. Relevant topics are specified below.

The aim of this workshop is to support PhD-students in creating a basis for a quality submission, which may then be published at a signature conference or journal.


  • Coordination of decentralized producers and consumers, e. g. Demand Response and Demand Side Management
  • Multi-agent systems, autonomous systems, distributed artificial intelligence, self-organization
  • Multi-domain approaches in power system optimization (e. g. power-2-gas, hybrid networks, etc.)

Software and system architectures

  • Information technology for the integration of distributed energy systems
  • Standards, data and information models, reference architectures
  • Communication technologies

Economic aspects and sustainability

  • Concepts and IT systems for energy markets and market integration
  • Business models, e-services
  • Acceptance and behavioral aspects of market participants
  • Incentives, tariff models and pricing mechanisms
  • Economic assessment of energy systems
  • Governance, regulatory Aspects

Dependability, safety and trust

  • Collection and use of energy data
  • Aspects of QoS in power supply (power quality issues, requirements engineering regarding stability and real-time constraints)

Modeling and simulation

  • (Co-) simulation approaches for the assessment of planning and control approaches
  • Modeling of components of power systems
  • Verification of Smart Grid component models

Specific applications

  • Integration and coordination of loads of electric vehicles
  • IT and services for electric mobility / intermodal mobility systems

Submission and Schedule of the workshop:

English language papers describing the PhD research topic are to be submitted in PDF format directly in the Easy Chair system under EasyChair. The submissions should detail the research questions and the methodology chosen for answering them. Long papers with a maximum of 12 pages and short papers with a maximum of 6 pages will be accepted. Contributions exceeding this limit will not be accepted. Entries must reflect the following structure:

• Status of the project (planned / already begun projects, duration and project embedding)
• Methodology
• Related work
• First results (only long paper)
• If applicable: first publications

Information about the format of the workshop
Numbers of authors: Single-authorship of PhD students is highly recommended. A mention of the supervising professor is required.
Shepherding process: An intensive and interactive reviewing process begins with the acceptance of a paper to the shepherding process. The process is designed to support the submitter in clearly defining her/his PhD project. The accepted papers will be assigned to an individual member of the program committee called “shepherd” who supports the author (“sheep”) in an iterative process sharpening the presentation of the project. By submitting a contribution to the doctoral workshop, the author agrees to participate in this process.
Language and length of presentation: English language contributions are mandatory, the language of the presentations and discussions of the work is also in English. This is to ensure that all invited domain experts (PhD students and committee members) are able to participate in constructive discussions. The time slot for presentation is 40 minutes for long papers and 20 min for short contributions. The discussion time in each case is another 40 min or 20 min, respectively. Guidelines for the presentations will be provided.
Conference proceeding: The workshop itself publishes no proceedings. The aim of the workshop is to support participants in creating the basis for a quality submission, which can then be published at a conference or in a journal. However, short presentations of contributions in form of posters may be published in the proceedings of the adjunct D-A-CH-Energieinformatik (see next item)
Cooperation with D-A-CH Energieinformatik: The PhD workshop is organized in cooperation with the D-A-CH Energieinformatik conference in Zurich, which provides participants with the opportunity to present and discuss their PhD work with a broader audience in the context of a joint poster session.
